Crafts in Dakar: what to buy, where, and how to bargain
Fabrics, sculptures, baskets, leather: public places to shop and practical habits for bringing home something beautiful at a fair price.
What to bring home
Wax and bazin fabrics; wooden sculptures and masks; baskets and woven objects; leather sandals and bags; jewellery; reverse-glass paintings.
Where to shop
HLM Market is a reference for fabrics, with the possibility of having them sewn locally: allow a few days. Soumbédioune’s craft village brings together varied crafts. Kermel Market is a place for crafts and baskets. Sandaga Market offers a lively market atmosphere and fabrics; keep a close eye on your belongings. Village des Arts is for contemporary art, directly from artists.
How to bargain
Bargaining is normal and expected in markets, never in shops with displayed prices. Ask the price, take your time, offer clearly less and meet in the middle. Stay friendly. Buying several items from the same seller can help you get a better price. Know when to leave politely and carry small change. A few Wolof words help: Ñaata la? (how much is it?), Jërëjëf (thank you).
Pitfalls
Be cautious with touts who offer to guide you to a shop: they receive a commission, which you pay. Objects presented as “old” or “collectible” are mostly recent; buy them for their beauty, not their age. For a genuinely old object or one of cultural value, learn about export rules before buying.
Before leaving
Leave room in your suitcase, ask for sturdy packaging for fragile objects and keep fabrics dry.
